Ben completed his Juris Doctor of Law at the University of Saskatchewan in 2016. He also attended Simon Fraser University in British Columbia where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology.

An accomplished bagpiper, Ben has travelled internationally. In both 2003 and 2005, he won the Juvenile World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland with the Robert Malcolm Memorial Pipe Band. He placed 6th in the world in 2009 with his adult band, the New Westminster Police Pipe Band, and tied for 6th again in the following year. In 2011, Ben and his band won the North American Championships in Maxville, Ontario. While competing internationally, Ben also instructed the Simon Fraser University youth band. He toured with them to Scotland in 2012, coaching them to 3rd place at the World Championships in their category.
